"Grand Hotel's grand days seem to be well and truly over. It was adequate if you don't mind scaffolding in the hallway and having to go into a seedy sports-bar to collect your keys. There were people smoking/chatting down the corridor on the stairs at the back until late. You can't really leave you windows open and feel secure at night. I found the old school deco with carpet on the walls depressing.
I am not particularly fastidious when tired and it did have facilities for showering, cup of tea and a clean bed. It doesn't compare at all well to other NZ hotels I have stayed in but it was cheaper. I would love to see it decorated with modern flair. It has a pub, a restaurant and FM radio station in the same building and couldn't be closer to the bus station." J Cave, 18 October 2010

Grand hotel, whangarei Response: Thankyou for your review. In answer to it we would like to clarify a couple of points. 1/ The scaffoding was a temporary measure so the painter could re do the ceiling to its original state (it has since been removed) 2/ I am not sure if you would leave your windows open in any city estabishment. 3/ Our rooms are non smoking so people will smoke at other points of the building. 4/ The radio station is actually an advertsing site, the actual station is not operated from the pub site. 5/ The rooms have been re painted and papered over the last 2-3 years, but am sure you would appreciate the enormous cost in redecorating to modern status. We apprecaite your comment that the rooms were clean, and all rooms do have their own ensuites. We are the only hotel situated in the CBD of Whangarei and are in an ideal location for people who wish to be central in town.

Overview

The Grand Hotel is located in the heart of Whangarei, Northland New Zealand. It is the only Hotel in the CBD. Conveniently located near the main bus station our rooms are all ensuite and fully serviced.

The Hotel offers bar and function facilities and affordable accommodation for the independent traveller.

The original hotel, built in approximately 1870 burnt down completely in the 1890s and was rebuilt in 1900. The current building was originally called the Commercial Hotel and was re-named the Grand Hotel after the 1953 Royal Tour of New Zealand by HRH Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh who stayed in the hotel with their entourage. The balcony from where the Queen waved to her subjects is still a feature of the hotel.
