Kapiti Coast has a rich and diverse history. Historically, the region was settled by a succession of Maori tribes and was the stronghold of the famous chief, Te Rauparaha in the 1820s and 30s. There are established heritage sites in the area to identify and commemorate the unique history that is an integral part of the Horowhenua region.
There are a number of tangata whenua or indigenous (first nations) peoples who settled and occupied this region around the 1820 - 1830s. The tangata whenua of the region include Ngati Raukawa, Muaupoko and Ati Awa ki Whakarongotai. They are kaitiaki (guardians) of this area.
