The Island is an internationally renowned nature reserve and bird sanctuary with some of the world's rarest birds. See rare saddlebacks, stitch birds, kokako (blue-wattled crow), red crowned parakeets, and the flightless takahe (Notornis). These rare birds co-exist with the more common pigeon, kaka, tui, bell bird, fantail, tomtit, robin, weka and royal spoonbill. And along the coastline are gulls, gannets, penguins, terns and shearwaters.
