"Arriving at 3pm the first appearance was that the building was undergoing external renovations. Entering the building we met the receptionist who appeared tired, uninterested, unfriendly and truly unwelcoming. Taking our card details giving a room number and key then sending us on our way. No other people were waiting to be served during this time. On finding our own way to the room it was clean & tidy however the desk folder contained cheap photocopied stained and used advertising notices. I went to the in house dining room bar which was advertised to open at 5pm and wasn't until 30 minutes later when the same receptionist turned up with the keys and commented that it was a quiet night tonight no need to hurry! With that remark my wife and I decided to go and eat out. The Chateau fire alarms started up at 8.30am Sunday morning so I went to the look outside the door and a bewildered looking cleaner commented its a real alarm so I hastened my wife immediately leaving our belongings and vacated the building we assembled outside with 20 or so other guests. We all remained outside for 30 minutes until the fire dept had checked everything before we were allowed back inside. We couldn't wait to pack our things and checkout to find a nice place for breakfast so we returned to the receptionist desk and yes, you're right it was her, once again not much of a talker, asking if we used the room bar, taking the room key, after working out our account, passed over our invoice then carried on what she was doing. We expected atleast some sort of concerned comment or apology or compensation for the unscheduled 'wakeup call' but NO! nothing from this Ice Maiden at Chateau Marlborough. As experenced traveller's nationally and international my wife and I choose our places thoughtfully. We had our expectations of The Chateau Marlborough to be a place of generous service and hospitality but left feeling disappointed and rather stressful from the ordeal. However, I'm sure that improvement can be accomplished if our comments are viewed constructively so the advertised 5 star rating turns out to be that, five star!" Michael Angell, 20 August 2008
